Thomas Berau

“A real find is Thomas Berau in the role of Arcalaus […] His highly cultivated voice and absolute stage presence turn a cliché into a grand character.” opernnetz.de, October 2009

Thomas Berau was born in Ingolstadt and received his vocal education from Charlotte Lehmann at Würzburg Conservatory. He complemented his studies with Ernst Huber-Contwig in Hannover and Irwin Gage in Zürich and was awarded with prizes in the Würzburg Mozart Competition and the "Franz Schubert und die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts" Competition in Graz.

After first commitments at the opera festival “Schloss Rheinsberg” and Würzburg Theatre, Mr Berau became a member of the ensemble at Mannheim National Theatre, his roles having included Don Giovanni, Conte Almaviva, Jeletzky, Marcello, Germont, Wolfram, Amfortas, Beckmesser, Vater (HÄNSEL UND GRETEL), Escamillo and Arcalaus in J. C. Bach’s AMADIS DES GAULES. In 2010/11 he will make his debut as the four villains in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN.

As a concert singer, Mr Berau has performed in Berlin, London, Paris, Munich, Zürich and Vienna. Apart from the traditional repertoire he is intensively engaged in modern music and regularly works with contemporary composers. He has participated in the world premiers of Giorgio Battistelli’s AUF DEN MARMORKLIPPEN (2002) and Moritz Eggert’s DIE SCHNECKE (2004), the latter under the direction of Hans Neuenfels. Eggert has also dedicated his song cycle KRAUSSERIANA to Mr Berau and was his accompanist in a scenic production of Schubert’s WINTERREISE which received the Bavarian Theatre Award and was shown at Nürnberg Opera, Ludwigsburg Festival and Prinzregententheater Munich.

As a guest, Mr Berau has been heard at Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Munich State Opera, Wiesbaden State Theatre, Stuttgart State Opera, Hannover State Opera, Mainz State Theatre and Basel Opera. In 2010, he will make his debut at Wels Wagner Festival as Heerrufer.
